Intermediate Wood Turning Course Overview.

This course is designed for turners ready to deepen their skills by working through the full process of creating a piece from raw wood to finished product.

Students will begin by learning to identify common turning woods in the field, with an emphasis on understanding tree species, grain characteristics, and how growth conditions affect usability.

We will discuss responsible selection and harvesting practices to ensure both safety and sustainability. Once suitable material is chosen, students will practice portioning logs into blanks.

Instruction will cover reading the log, positioning cuts to minimize defects, and maximizing yield.

Techniques for sealing and stacking blanks for air drying will be demonstrated, along with discussion of kiln options and how moisture content affects turning.

The course then moves into rough turning, where students will shape blanks into stable forms for controlled drying. Proper tool use, speed selection, and safety techniques will be reinforced.

After drying, students will return to their pieces for finish turning, refining shapes and surfaces to professional quality. Finally, students will explore finishing methods, including sanding techniques, applying oils, waxes, or film finishes, and buffing for durability and aesthetic appeal.

By the end of the course, participants will understand the full cycle of wood preparation and turning, enabling them to confidently transform raw logs into beautiful, finished pieces.

Prerequisite: Basic turning skills and familiarity with common tools.

Joel Cole will bring some wood with him, but everyone should be encouraged to bring what they have.
